Ledger™ Live App

Secure Crypto Wallet & Portfolio Manager — Desktop & Mobile Companion for Ledger Hardware

Ledger Live: Your secure interface for self-custody

Ledger Live combines a modern portfolio manager with an ironclad security model: your private keys remain inside your Ledger hardware device while Ledger Live acts as an easy-to-use companion to install apps, manage accounts, sign transactions, interact with DeFi and NFTs, and monitor portfolio performance.

What is Ledger Live?

Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application that pairs with Ledger hardware wallets (Nano family, Stax, etc.) to provide a complete, secure crypto management experience. It supports thousands of assets across multiple blockchains, integrates with partner services for buying and swapping, and enables staking and NFT viewing — all while ensuring that private keys never leave the hardware device.

This app is designed for everyone: beginners who want a clear, guided setup; experienced users who require advanced integrations; and institutions that demand highest-grade key isolation. The UI combines account views, transaction history, market prices, and device management into one consistent interface.

Key features

Portfolio Dashboard

Track balances, asset allocation, and historical performance across all your accounts in one place. Ledger Live aggregates on-chain data and fiat conversions to present a single snapshot of your holdings.

Send & Receive

Create transactions from Ledger Live; every transaction must be confirmed on your Ledger device screen before it is signed. This prevents host-based malware from tampering with amounts or addresses.

App Manager

Install and remove blockchain-specific apps (for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) from your device via the Manager. Apps consume limited device storage; uninstalling an app doesn't delete funds — they remain recoverable via your recovery phrase.

Buy, Swap & Stake

Access integrated partners to purchase crypto, swap between assets, or stake supported tokens. Ledger Live handles partner quotes and shows fees transparently.

NFT Support

View your NFTs and verify ownership on-layer supported networks. Ledger Live provides a secure viewing flow while leaving keys in the device for any signing operations required by marketplaces.

dApp Connectivity

Use WalletConnect or recommended connectors to safely interact with decentralized applications. Ledger Live keeps the signing process on-device while the dApp provides the user-facing experience.

Security model — why keys never leave the device

Ledger Live is intentionally a thin client: it orchestrates actions and displays information while delegating sensitive operations to the secure element inside the physical Ledger device. The device contains a certified Secure Element that stores private keys and performs cryptographic signing operations. When you sign a transaction, the device shows the details (amount, fees, destination, contract calls) on its screen — this visual confirmation is the final authority before signing.

This separation ensures that even if your computer or phone is compromised, attackers cannot extract your private keys or sign transactions without physical access to the device and the PIN. Additional protections include device PIN, optional passphrase (which creates hidden wallets), firmware verification, and the requirement to accept firmware updates on-device.

Important: Ledger Live will never ask for your 24-word recovery phrase. If any website, app, or person requests it, treat that as a scam and disconnect immediately.

Download & get started — step-by-step

1 — Download Ledger Live

Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website or your device's verified app store. Choose the correct OS build (Windows, macOS, Linux) or mobile store (App Store / Google Play). Verifying the source reduces the risk of counterfeit installers.

2 — Install & verify

Run the installer and follow the guided steps. Advanced users can optionally verify a digital signature or checksum to confirm the file's integrity before installing.

3 — Connect your Ledger device

Plug your Ledger hardware wallet into the computer using the provided USB cable (or pair via Bluetooth for supported models) and unlock it with your PIN. Ledger Live will detect the device and prompt you to proceed with setup or restoration.

4 — Initialize or Restore

If you're new: choose “Set up as new device” and follow the on-device prompts to create a PIN and write down your recovery phrase (usually 24 words). If restoring: choose “Restore from recovery phrase” and enter your phrase directly on the device. Never enter the recovery phrase into your computer or Ledger Live itself.

5 — Install apps & add accounts

From the Manager install the blockchain apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). Then add accounts in Ledger Live corresponding to installed apps. Ledger Live will index relevant public addresses and show balances for each account.

6 — Test with a small transaction

Before making large moves, send a small test amount to confirm everything is functioning end-to-end. Verify the receiving address on the Ledger device screen before confirming the transaction.

Advanced workflows: passphrases, multi-sig & developer tools

Advanced users often combine Ledger Live and hardware devices in sophisticated setups:

  • Passphrases: Add an additional secret word to create hidden wallets. This provides plausible deniability and additional security but increases responsibility — losing the passphrase means losing access to that hidden wallet.
  • Multi-signature wallets: For larger holdings, distribute signing authority across multiple devices or parties. Ledger supports integration into multi-sig workflows using compatible wallet software.
  • Developer & API tools: Ledger maintains libraries and developer docs for advanced integrations. Use WalletConnect, the Ledger SDKs, and audited libraries when building integrations that interface with Ledger Live.

If you implement advanced strategies, always rehearse recovery steps on a separate test device with small funds so you understand the exact restore and signing process.

DeFi, NFTs & third-party integrations

Ledger Live can be used in tandem with DeFi frontends and marketplaces. Common patterns involve initiating a request in a dApp, which then asks the user to sign via WalletConnect or a browser extension that delegates signing to the Ledger device. In all cases, the device displays transaction details for verification. Be especially careful with smart contract interactions: review function calls and allowances before approving.

NFT management in Ledger Live focuses on viewing and verifying ownership. For marketplace interactions, always ensure the contract and metadata match expectations and confirm any marketplace signatures on-device.

Troubleshooting — common issues & fixes

  • Device not detected: Try another USB cable/port, ensure the device screen is active, and restart Ledger Live. Avoid USB hubs when possible.
  • Firmware update failed: Reconnect and retry via Ledger Live. If the device is unresponsive, follow the official recovery guide or contact verified support.
  • Missing balances: Re-add the account in Ledger Live; ensure the corresponding app is installed on-device and that you are on the correct derivation path.
  • Forgotten PIN: Wipe and restore from your recovery phrase; this is the main reason to keep the recovery phrase safe offline.
If you suspect malware or a compromised host, stop interactions, move small funds to a new address generated on a freshly initialized device, and secure your recovery phrase.

Long-term best practices

To keep your crypto safe over years and changes in technology:

  • Store recovery phrases offline in a fireproof/waterproof medium; consider metal backups for longevity.
  • Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated via official releases only.
  • Use passphrases judiciously and document inheritance plans securely.
  • Perform occasional restore drills on a spare device to verify your backups work.
  • Minimize exposure by splitting funds between hot (small) and cold (large) wallets; use Ledger Live to manage the cold portion.

FAQ

Can Ledger Live access my private keys?

No — Ledger Live never has access to private keys. All signing occurs inside the secure element on your device. Ledger Live only receives public addresses and transaction data to present to you.

What if Ledger shuts down?

Your funds are recoverable via the recovery phrase using other compatible wallets. Ledger Live is a convenience and security layer, but the recovery standards are open and allow restoration elsewhere if needed.

Is Ledger Live safe for DeFi interactions?

Yes—when used properly. Use Ledger Live as a secure signing layer, verify contract calls on-device, and limit token approvals. For complex DeFi operations, use small test amounts first.
